I don`t think a leak is the problem, if the engine got/sucked "false air" while cold and with choke on, the engine would fail to start at all, as the choke would not work.
Try adjusting the idling speed to normal when the engine is warm, and see what happens.
If the engine then fails to idle normally when cold, try tweaking with the carb. (its a carb-engine, right?)
