Firstly I would like to say thankyou to all of those on saabnet who have helped me over the years maintaing and modify my 1972 99 (it was one of the oldest and neatest 99s in Western Australia). Unfortunately I had a little accident with the car. (Sorry David W, i never did get around to fixing that Grill with Epoxy...but I still have the grill, only headlight surround was badly damaged in the accident.)
On the Saturday of the Easter weekend, while camping in the South West of Western Australia I took my 1972 99 for a quick joy ride on some gravel roads. Unfortunately my bravado got the better of me and I slid off the road (almost sidways) and hit a tree. There were no serious injuries to myself or the two passengers but the car is probably a write off. The impact was on the front right, destroying both quater pannels, the bonnet and causing a chassis rail to bend the floor pan on the drivers side. Amazingly apart from the right indicator no glass was broken.
As one passer-by mentioned while waiting for the tow truck......"at least you choose a safe car to hit a tree"
Does anyone have any ideas on how to determine if the car is a write off? (I would consider spending up to Au$3000 fixing it) I suspect the chasis damage is not repariable, (although the roof line does not appear to be damaged)
The moral of this story: Make sure you know the roads before driving fast on gravel roads. I was caught on a nasty off camber right hand bend on 'pea' gravel. And if you are going to do silly things off road....do it in a saab......
Thinking that my 1972 99 is a write off I have picked up an unlicensed 1977 EMS. The car is fairly rough but a definate runner, if only I could figure out how to hook up the heater. Can anyone point me in the direction of some engine pics or schematics so I can figure out the best (and correct) way to connect the heater.
Cheers
Justin
