buying a 96

I thought I would take advantage of the seemingly great expertise on this bulletin board to ask for some advice on purchasing a 96. I am a die hard 99 freak but want to venture into the realm of the 96.
I am looking at a 67 but have also seen ads for a 71 and a 69. What are the major differences? I am aware of the engine differences but is the 1700 more or less desirable (I am durability rather than a performance kind of guy). How about other changes such as in the transmission? I am sensitive to these issues as I have owned many 99s and still so have two. Sometimes a year or so difference makes for a better vehicle.
Any other pointers before I make the plunge? I look forward to many happy hours on the bulletin board!
