"Urban legend"? While the V4 started out life in 1967 with a Solex carb, all V4s from 1969 on came stock with a Ford (FoMoCo brand) single-barrel carburetor. While I don't have any facts to prove it, long-ago experience suggests it's the same carb that was used on the 1.6-liter Capri and probably other 1.6-liter Cologne-engined Fords as well.
In mid-1977 Saab switched over to a TWO- barrel progressive Solex carburetor to restore power lost ot European emissions standards... but they had stopped selling V4s in the US by then, so any 2bbls you might run across in the US were unofficial imports or later DIY upgrades.
If you've got the 2bbl manifold, you can fit various other 2bbl carbs, including (I think) the one that was on the 1.6-liter Ford Fiesta -- this wasn't a Ford carb, though, it was a Weber 28/32.
If you've got a '67-'69 V4 and for some reason you want to ditch the original Solex carb, don't fool around looking for a FoMoCo -- they're OK if working well, but wear out eventually and then aren't worth the bother to rebuild. A Weber 34ICH is a better choice. You'll need the throttle-linkage parts off a FoMoCo car, though, because on the Weber (and FoMoCo) the throttle shaft turns in the opposite direction as on the Solex.
More than you wanted to know, right...? : )
