I always thought the best deals were ones where the buyer and seller both were happy. this has alot more to do with the situations of both parties then any market value or fair price.
If the car is right and you can afford it as a toy then pay the asking price or a little under if that makes you feel better.
If you are a starving _______ living on ramen noodles and you love/need the car and can't live without it, I know what you're going through, put down all you can and go to the clinic give more plasma and volunteer for drug company tests until you can pay it off.
If you dont care about the karmic ramifications and want to beat up the seller for every last penny, and then resell the car to someone with more money than brains, take the asking price and divide in half subtract $100 and wave that amount of cash under the sellers nose and see how hungry he is. Hungry kids, pissed off old lady, late trailer payments will help you in getting the lowest price.
I don't mean to be nasty, on this most civil site on the net, but price/value issues are so subjective and to me so meaningless. A good deal is all in your head.
