Okay - here's the story:

As most of you know, my '67 V4 has a long (haunted) history of overheating and I've been replacing, repairing and improving the cooling system piece by piece. One of the latest things I did was have a new water pump installed. The car continued to overheat so I next planned on installing a bigger better 12" electric puller fan (it now has a 9" pusher.) Since I needed to remove the old fan pulley I decided to go ahead and add a more powerful alternator at the same time. (I had put on a replacement alternator 35amp some months before.) I plan to put AC in this car later so I'll need the juice.

I asked for help finding a better alternator on Saabnet and VSaab but no one seemed to have a real solution (some guys say they do but then the part numbers don't exist, etc. You all know the story.) Finally, I took my original Bosch down to the local Auto Zone and they helped me look through all the rebuilts to find one that would fit that had at least 70 amps.

We first tried Nippon Denso but when I got home its pulley wouldn't line up.

Then we hit pay dirt. We found a rebuilt 75 amp Mitsubishi (WAIT FOR IT!)

part# 14879.

The guy said it fits some Plymouths! It has a split bracket on the bottom instead of the solid piece like the Bosch and I hoped to use this to help adjust the alternator forward or back as needed in the car.

After a little futzing, it installed perfectly. I had to use some washers on the front and back brackets to move the alternator back to align with the fan and balance shaft pulleys. (FYI - be sure to use 2 bolts - one on the front bracket and one on the back - to install the alternator. If you try to use a long 1/4" bolt it will push the alternator brackets together and bind the armature - trust me, I found out the hard way.)

The wiring was simple, the 2 power wires (thicker and tan colored) go on the alternator power terminal and the alternator light wire (red) plugged onto the "light" spade terminal as marked on the body of the alternator. The ground (black wire) connected to a screw on the back of the alternator body.

I bought a shorter fan belt and bypassed the fan pulley, started the car up and it squealed like a pig and started the belt smoking.

That's when I discovered the water pump pulley didn't align. I can run it with the old belt around all 4 pulleys but it won't work around just the water pump, balance shaft and alternator. Too misaliged I guess.

With the old belt running on all 4 pulleys the alternator works perfectly. The lights don't dim at idle even with the heater fan, headlights and cooling fan running. The alternator insert says it produces 64 amps at 1800 rpm and 89 amps at 3000. Awesome.

That's when I did my usual, ask the experts on Saabnet.

It sounds to me like you guys are telling me the pulley shouldn't be misaligned but I assure you it is. It also sounds like I need to pull the water pump to fix it which, according to many, is a royal pain in the ass. Ashcraft's V4 book tells how to do it more easily. Guess I'll find out which is true.

Anyway, thanks for the info and wish me luck.
