In my '80 99 I had a bearing for that fan wear out, causing a lot of noise. It was the bearing on the end opposite the fan motor. It is easy to access, just take off the round plastic end cover from the heater box (under the hood, on the driver's side) by removing the 3 (4?) screws. The bearing is mounted in the cover. It's kind of an odd 1-piece bronze bushing, spherical in shape to make it self-aligning. I replaced mine with a miniature radial ball bearing, but it took some rigging and wasn't really worth the effort. If you have a parts car, you might have good luck just by swapping that end cover and adding a touch of grease.
BTW, with that cover removed, you can pull out the squirrel-cage fan. Might be a good idea to check inside to make sure nothing is hitting the fan, such as the thermocouple wire for the heater core. Hope that helps.
