I drilled a hole in the thermostat and it worked like a charm (no more overheating.) I think exhaust gas may have been the culprit, although I do not seem to lose any coolant into the cylinders. It is strange, I have had three different engines with the same problem. A new thermostat seems to correct the problem for a few months, but then it reoccurs. I have no plans to do anything else to correct this problem, because when replacing the head gasket, it seems to be impossible to get a good factory seal.
