Well, I finally reserved my room at the group discount rate of $290 - double occupancy. When taxes and "gratuities" were added on, it added up to about $365. I was a little taken aback by the added charges, but it turns out that that's typical of group rates when the hotel charge includes multiple meals. So I broke down the $290 to see what I was getting for my money.
For $290, my wife and I get 2 nights in a nice hotel with all the features ( http://www.attitash.com/summer02/grandsummithotel.html ). Plus the following for meals:
Friday night BBQ for 2: $18.75 x 2 = $37.50
Saturday lunch for 2: $11.00 x 2 = $22.00
Saturday Banquet for 2: $31.00 x 2 = $62.00
Breakfast Sat & Sun for 2: $10.00 x 4 = $40.00
So a total of a little over $160.00 for meals leaves $130 for 2 nights for 2 in a resort hotel - not really a bad price considering what your local Holiday Inn or Best Western gets. Plus, this place is giving us a banquet room, facilitating the BBQ, giving us the field for the Concours for the day, delivering the lunches to the field Saturday, and helping with registration. Truly a pretty damn good deal. So as a package, it does seem like a lot, and the taxes and gratuities suck (when do taxes not suck?), but for what we're getting it's actually a great deal.
Does that mean that everyone should stay there? Well, if you can swing it, I'd say do it, BUT we've also got camping available, and the whole of the area's lodging available at http://www.4seasonresort.com - hey, if you're driving up a 93 or 96, more than a few of our members have "bed kits", so take a tip from the Scandinavians - some of us are going to be in the parking lot most of the night either way!
Hope you all can make it. And if you can get us a better deal for next year - PLEASE, let us know how.
See you in the White Mountains
