Hello,
It is, despite all the discussion to the contrary, possible to install an aftermarket head unit in a 9-5 and retain the steering wheel controls and all warning sounds.
The key to doing this is the wiring harnesses sold by incartec.co.uk. Once you identify your car and the brand of the head unit you are installing they will tell you which harnesses (and fascia plates) you need.
The aftermarket head units in the UK and Europe come with wiring harnesses that include ISO connectors. This is assumed by incartec when they advise you what to purchase for your installation. Therefore you will need to obtain an ISO wiring harness for your head unit. I got mine for about $25.
I had the installation completed by a local car audio installer and it works perfectly. And the sound is much, much improved and CarPlay is great.
I hope that all who wish to upgrade their head unit can do so quickly and easily.
Yours,
Paul
