Jt, I also don't have a garage, so I hear you! Too bad it's the wrong season. I would search the archives for more info on an automatic transmission filter, but I think you will find almost no information.

Your "check gearbox" symptom sounds like the classic range switch (or neutral safety switch) failure on the NG 900. This is the only real fault of these transmissions, as otherwise they seem to be very reliable. There is a lot of info in the archives if you search on 'range switch'. I will link a post below for reference.

Basically, the switch is contact between the actual trans and the selector. It's an electrical/mechanical part. It seems to have crappy internal grease that gets bad when temps are cold. This triggers the 'check gearbox' light and puts the tranny "limp home" mode (fixed 2nd or 3rd gear). You can rejuvinate it for a while by moving the gear selector through the entire range 20-30 times to spread out the grease. Since it's free to try and takes about 1 minute, I would try this. But this is a temporary fix; eventually the problem comes back. When it gets really frequent, there is nothing to do but replace the switch. (I'm almost at that point.)

One final point: this is extremely common these transmissions, so if you mechanic isn't familiar with the range switch problem, I would guess he hasn't worked on many NG 900s.... Good luck!
