V6 Serpentine Belt / Idle pully Posted by aizzo [Email] (#1220) [Profile/Gallery] (more from aizzo) on Thu, 6 May 2004 09:04:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I think the idler pulley on my car is going bad. It sometimes makes a rumbling noise (wife describes it as marbles). It seems to happen most often when there is load on the alternator. One good example is when I put the car in reverse (auto tran) with brake on, then the cooling fan comes on. The niose is very noticeable then. I have an alldatadiy.com subscription and looked at the description about how to loosen the serpentine (they call it Drive Belt) belt, but I'm a little confused. It looks like I just take a 15 mm open-ended wrench (pretty good sized) and pull the tensioner towards the front of the car. Is that all there is to it? I don't need to replace the belt, I just want to loosen it so I can have a better look at the idler. One other thing that concerns me is that alldata references a TSB that describes a special automatic belt tensioner locking tool. Do I need this to get the belt on/off?
Thanks for any help!
