I feel like I’m shooting a dead horse today, but I’m still not comfortable on what belt to use for the short belt mod. I actually did the SBM a few months ago, using a Gates K060970 belt. I’m now experiencing an intermittent “singing” of the belt that is highly annoying. (Refer to my previous post on the subject.) Trying another belt would seem to be the simplest and least costly thing to try to get rid of the noise.

The consensus of this board seems to be that a belt of 2460 mm is the correct short belt mod length. Doing the math on the belt I installed, a 97 inch belt is 2464 mm long. This would seem close enough to the 2460 recommended, but the mark on my tensioner gauge is at (or slightly outside of) the minimum.

I bought a second belt that was listed at 2455 mm, and after installation saw virtually no change in the tensioner gauge. I removed the belt, as the change in tension was too small to have any appreciable effect. I am now thinking that I will need a belt of about 96 inches (2438 mm) to bring the gauge on my tensioner in the proper range. Even then, I’m not assured this will cure my “singing” sound.

Has anyone used a belt as short as 2438 mm? What am I missing here? Why doesn’t the 2460 mm belt seem to work in my car? Is it possible that the idler pulley I got from eEuroparts is smaller in diameter than it should be, thereby causing a dimensional ripple effect throughout the serpentine system? What about other pulleys in the system… water pump, a/c compressor, p/s pump, and alternator? I haven’t changed any of these personally, but I have only owned the car for a little over a year, and don’t have records specific to any of these items. Any other ideas on why the belt is singing?
