V6 Idler pulley & oil pan drain plug leak Posted by aizzo [Email] (#1220) [Profile/Gallery] (more from aizzo) on Wed, 26 May 2004 10:11:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First, thanks for the advice from the board regarding replacement of the idler pulley on my V6. I did it a few weekends ago. The idler was definitely bad and the rattle now seems to be gone!
But, I was changing my oil this weekend (which I have probably done a dozen or so times before). After draining the oil and replacing the filter, I put the aluminum crush washer on the plug then proceeded to torque to 41-lbs. Then added oil. Well, I noticed that the drain plug was dripping and upon inspection could see that the crush washer did not seat properly (was off to the side). So, drained the oil again, and when I looked at the washer it was all mashed to one side of the plug almost completely broken in half (looked almost like a 'C'). Usually when I take it off it is pretty much crushed symmetrically around the plug (more like a messy 'O'). So, I put another aluminum washer on and tried again. Same thing. So this time I had a look at the oil pan and there is a "crease" near the drain hole (pretty sure its not a crack, its a smooth indentation) and the washer appears to be catching on this crease and then deforming as I torque the plug down. So, as a quick fix (how many times in one sunday afternoon can a guy drain/refill the oil anyway? :-) I put some RTV on a copper washer that I had and put the drain plug back in.
Well, it is dry now, but am I going to have to replace the oil pan? I have read posts on here about doing that and it sounds a little involved. Is there perhaps an after market plug that has some fashion of rubber gasket that might work in place of the OEM plug and washer deal?
Thanks -
Alan
