I have the almost the same issue except that it happens more often when it is cold, (rarely worked during winter, use trip meter). I think I have seen it happen on a large bump also, but will go "low" or "read correctly" at any time. Also if it has gone to the "empty" reading, and "is not", Topping tank off will usually bring it bake to life.

This may or may not help you.

I learned that the sender should measure, between 50 and 390 ohms: 305 ohms (3/4), 220 ohms (1/2), 135 ohms (1/4) and 100 ohms (Beginning of Low). Mine has always measure correctly. Other possibilities are in the Dash Electrical. But mine passes the dash-bashing test. So I have been lead to it being the sender, But due to the cost of $450 for part. I’m wait for the fuel pump to fail or if the gauge totally fails. I will then absolutely diagnose to see if I can get out of it cheaper. When it does bother me, I place something over it.
