Disarming the alarm without remote???

Here is an interesting story. I have a 1997 900S and I was visiting my family for the duration of the long 4th of July weekend. I locked my car on Friday using the remote control (which also activated the alarm) however by Sunday night the bataries in the remote have died. So the question is, I know that if I open the car using just the key if the alarm will go off, is that normal? If yes is there a way of disarming the alarm using the key and not the remote? My old Maxima had a trick if the alarm went off I could lock the drivers side door using the key then unlock it using the same key. However it is not the case with Saab's. Any advice is highly appreciated.
