After my post last week on this subject, I decided over the weekend to really tackle this problem once and for all.
I completely disassembled my throttle assembly, removing the position sensor, throttle plate and shaft, and all linkages, including the cable that attaches to the accelerator pedal. I carefully cleaned all the parts with carburetor cleaner, until they all looked factory new. Any moving part was given a light coat of Lubriplate Aero (low temp) lithium grease. With the cable removed from the car, I was able to work a fair amount of grease into the sheath of the cable. (The cable itself has about 5-6 inches of travel when in hand, so I was able to get the grease well into the sheath.) I also lubed the pivot points on the accelerator pedal.
One thing I was unable to do was to reverse the curve of the cable. The cable is not firmly attached to the end piece that seats in the linkage support, and would always twist itself to its original position. Also, the position sensor offered little or no resistance to rotation, so it didn't seem to be part of the problem.
After reassembly, the sticking problem exists no longer. What a difference it makes in smooth drivability! Thanks for all your input.
