Ghost in the Machine (seat problem)

My 96 900 SET seems to have some of the same power seat problems as I have seen posted here many times, but I have been unable to find anything about what my seats do.
I have the standard problem of them working sometimes, but not others. I haven't tried replacing the relay yet, because of the other issues I have:
When adjusting, passenger seat moves smoothly. Driver's seat seems to move in regular intervals of say 1 second of movement, followed by a one second pause, and so on. Could this also be related to a bad relay?
When ever the car door is opened, the seat moves to some preset forward position, even though I have all three memory settings set to my further back position.
To top things off, sometimes I'll be driving along, and the seat will start to move forward, or the seat back will recline. This is a little disconcerting in traffic. What is even stranger, is that when the seat makes these unexpected moves, it actually slides forward smoothly and constantly rather than the regular intervals when adjusting at other times.
Thanks for any advice you all might have to offer.
