It really is too bad that Saab or one of the aftermarket parts companies won't face up the the cable probs and come up with a new design - this is not rocket science!
Have you tried the washer trick? Might help by moving the adjustment point inside the cable a bit. Looks to me like it might be possible to do it without dismantling anything except moving the engine compartment fuse box, by cutting out one side of the washer(s) so it can be slid on like an alignment shim. If you had an old cable to test the fit it ought to be possible to make a slight interference fit over the rubber sleeve/stub so it will pop into place and stay put.
Personally, I have started looking out for the parts necessary for a hydraulic conversion, just to have them in stock when the clutch needs replacment.
