Don't just machine the head and put a new head gasket on this engine without doing a proper leak down test of piston rings.
It sounds like you have BADLY over heated the engine and in those cases the piston rings gets so hot that they loose their tension.
If that's the case you are never gonna get the engine to run properly with just a head gasket job.
Try to find a shop that have both the leak down tester equipment and the proper block off plate to install over each cylinder to do the leak down test.
If you get more than 15% leak down dry (5-10% wet) on each cylinder, something is going on.
And if the 2 center cylinders are getting worse readings than the outer ones, the piston rings are probably shot.
