They're all different. Given that the NG is a full generation of car development newer than the classic, some things are not quite as DIY as in the classic. For example: you can forget about doing a clutch yourself unless you have a lift or a LOT of patience.

But on the otherhand, the transmission is far superior in both proper gear ratio for the power, but also in robustness. They're quite bullet-proof.

The car is quite tunable if that's what you're looking to do (check the Perf board for that...).

Some things you miss with the new car -- the hatch is pretty deep heighth wise, but not as deep lengthwise. Also, the rear seat does not fold flat like in the classic. Rear leg room is less than the classic. But all in all, I love the car. The only real complaint I have with it is the silly clutch cable -- I just replaced mine today. They have a habit of wearing out even though the clutch itself is fine. My advice, when doing a clutch replacement, also convert to the '98+ hydraulic clutch system. Expensive, but much more maintenance-free.

Handling could be improved a bit from stock -- I have done so with the Abbott lowering springs, a more robust rear anti-sway bar, and the Viggen Rescue Kit from Abbott (MP Performance has a similar kit for much less now...).

That's it. Great car. But really a very different car from the classics. I love both for different reasons.

My $.02 worth...
