I have seen engine blocks being corroded/pitted where the inner o-ring resides. That can speed up the time to start leaking again.
Also, this way of using a stubby aluminum pipe with o-rings in between the block and water pump is a sorry excuse of engineering.
Those o-rings has been leaking prematurely since its introduction in 90-91.
