This is a common question that shows up on car bulletin boards in early winter.

Bushings in sport sedans often creak, suspensions act 'stiff' in cold weather, not just on Saabs. Replacing suspension parts blindly is no answer. You may end up replacing a good OEM part with a cheap aftermarket substitute, and the noise will just come back a few weeks later or the following winter.

There are late model 5-series BMW owners who spent $2-3K chasing this problem in vain. Sometimes bushings wear out long before the associated suspension component, and you end up paying for a more expensive repair than necessary. A good source of income for import car specialists.

Not sure if an un-lubricated ball joint can sound that way on a Saab, that would be bad news, but someone else here probably has the answer to that.

Bushings wear along with struts, shocks, control arms, sway bars etc. When it gets cold they make noise because the material gets stiff and is no longer as slippery on the surface. Often described it as a groaning or creaking.

It can show up as the suspension wears in, or a few months after you install brand new shocks and struts because the geometry of the suspension has changed. Lubricating bushings in pairs with silicone spray can fix the problem temporarily and give you a hint where to look, but you need a lot of patience or money AND a very friendly mechanic...

Not sure if original bushings on Saabs can be replaced w/o replacing other parts, but some specialty Saab shops seem to cary them in sets.

I just live with the creaks for a few minutes until the car warms up. The right choice of music on a cold morning helps enormously... <grin>
