Base and SE cars have very similar torque curves IMHO. I would not expect more tire spin/tire wear with SE versus base.

It would be very costly to upgrade your base powertrain to SE/HOT spec, and there would be very little difference at lower speed/lower RPM. Where the additional power of the HOT will make a difference is in acceleration above 80mph and absolute top speed. But unless you are planning to pull out and pass cars going 80, or drive 140, I see little practical value in this. Both the base and SE cars are very well suited to day-to-day driving in a wide range of conditions up to 80mph.

If you do want to tune your engine, it may make more economic sense to chip it. But do not expect dramatic torque gains at low RPM; there is no replacement for displacement! If you want to pull stumps at 1800RPM you must have the 2.3l. I have driven an Abbott-chipped base 9^3 and I found that the Abbott made for more of a difference than the HOT, but it did not of course provide aero- or Viggen-level of performance, again because of inherent limitations of engine displacement. I am sure the Abbott was capable of higher top speed, but did not attepmt to evaulate that.

As for your reliability comments, I agree that 17,000 to 20,000 miles trouble free is nothing to write home about. I expect that you will do a lot better than that, and if you do not, then holler like hell during the warranty period and make them fix it. Cruise on over to the C900 board and read the posts from the guys with 200,000 and 300,000 miles. Then remember, your drive train is SUPERIOR in quality to the C900 drivetrain. Other stuff on your car may not be as tough as the old 900s, but the engine and trans certainly are.
