Well I was flip-flopping between the 9-3SE and 9-5 until I went to the dealer today. Believe it or not I was still deciding what to get when I was at the dealers.
I was leaning heavily towards the 9-5 until I rationalized my needs. Living in Toronto Canada where the roads are faily good and the weather resembles Sweden, the 9-3SE will still be comfortable regardless of where I go, winter or summer. Our gas taxes are used to pay for road maintenance!
The 9-3SE is just more practical for a guy like myself, who needs a large holding area for all the travelling and miscellaneous. Plus the 9-3 just looks cooler for a guy my age (23). The 9-5 just reminds me of an old man's car with a family and kids. Sorry if this relates to the majority of the population in this board :)
And I believe that the 9-3SE will be more easier to sell or trade in when the time comes. Seriously I haven't seen a 9-5 in Toronto for the past 3 months. And trust me I've been keeping an eye out for Saabs.
Insurance wise, when you spend this much on a car, insurance is not really and issue and wasn't really the case for me as well. My insurance went up 200 bucks a year, not much at all considering the car I'm trading in is a Honda Civic.
Pricewise, I'm sure people in Canada would like to know this, without giving all the details:
9-5 + Sunroof + Leather
Invoice Difference Off MSRP = $5200
9-3 SE
Invoice Difference Off MSRP = $4500
I'm sure from this you can figure out the dealer invoice. Realistically look for $1000 off MSRP and $500 in other related incentives. The dealers get a rebate from GM when an employee buys from them, I think 5% of invoice. In my case, $2000 or so.
Hope I was helpful with this message and will be back from time to time.

Soon to be '01 9-3SE
