A couple of thoughts-
First, why do you think your local dealer will be much, if any higher priced than an internet service? Fact is, I looked pretty hard for my Viggen and in the end, my local dealer gave me the same price as I could get on the internet. This is my first purchase from this Saab only dealership. They treat me extremely well and in hindsght, I am very pleased that I bought it there and from them.
Second- In all of the new cars I have owned, and many came as "company cars" from our HQ several states away, I have only encountered one dealer telling me to bugger off cause I did not buy the car there. It happened to be Mc Donald motors in N Conway NH, and to this day I resent that experience and will never buy a car from them. I subsequently spoke with several people about this experience and was told that I should complain directly to Ford. I figured it was not worth the effort as the dealership would retaliate one way or another. So I would feel out the local Saab dealer's service manager (not the sales manager) and see what he says. It is a known fact that almost all these dealerships make their profit off of service and spare parts. Moreover, most service and sales departments are at loggerheads and the service tech couldn't care less where you bought the car. Sounds like your VW dealer has more business than he can handle. I almost bought an A4 from a local VW/Audi dealership but their uppity attitude so turned me off that I went with the Viggen and do not regret it.
Last thought- look for MY2000 leftovers as the deals are incredible out there. You'll probably get the suroof you don't want, but you sure wont be paying extra for it.
