i am also one of the guys not so happy with the original sound in the 9-3. i have planned the following:
- upgrade rear speakers. done with JBL power series speakers
- upgrade front speakers. done this weekend.
- install amps.
- install sub.
installation of 6.5" 2-way component speakers in the front doors plus tweeters in the dash brought a really good result. i was able to get JBL GT 6.0c series speakers for around 75$. they were on sale. i made aluminium plates for the tweeters in the dash, and they are adjustable, so they don´t fire towards the windshield. good staging and clear sound with rather deep and tight bass from the front doors. those speakers really start to work with the low power the head unit can produce. next step will be the installation of the main amp (magnat classic 720, giving 4 * 90w rms) and my custom built sub (polk audio db10 in a 10litres closed box with a jensen 250w rms amp). i have planned to build a "false trunk floor", where the speakers, x-over and navigation system unit will be installed. this will also helt to flaten the "step" in the trunk when the seats are folded down. pics plus construction plan will follow.
