This is not uncommon. Some folks are going with 205/55-16's to get better wheel protection. Quite the opposite direction! Many stock 16" rims get bent. 17" wheels are made for flat surfaces, not real roads. Others are inflating the tires on their 16" rims to higher pressures to protect the rims. In this cold weather, you loose 1 PSI per 10F drop. So if you do not pump up your tires in cold weather, you increase the risk of wheel damage. Just when the pot holes are starting to bloom, unless you got them all year round.
I know that this is not much comfort. You can't go to 16" rims as your tires are then rather useless, and replacing the tires and rims is major pain. But this serves as a warning to others who read this thread.
Perhaps you can make some better judgemements about what you drive over. I dodge road defects to protect my vehicle. Others I know will have road conditions that are simply bogus.
