As Snaab correctly points out, installing the new sliding 9-3 armrest is easier than falling down. Indeed, all you have to do is carefully but firmly pry the existing lid hinge off the center console knobs and just pop the new armrest on. No screws, no bolts, takes about 10 seconds.
I like the new armrest. I'm relatively tall (6'2") but for me it works well. I just wish it sort of "locked" or "stuck" in place while extended, because when I shift it tends to roll a bit back and forth.
I never gave it much thought beforehand, but the extra storage is incredibly useful. Now I have a place to store my radar detector (which falls out of the glovebox when opened) and my fiancee's random lipstick containers and ball point pens.
