Downshifting - Wearing Out Clutch?

After reading about double clutching and heel&toe in the 9000 forum, I thought I ask this question ..... sorry for lack of knowledge in this area.
How many people actually downshifts here with their Saabs? I use to downshift all the time when I had a Honda but have been more protective when I got the 93.
Is it better to downshift to slow down the car than simply pressing the clutch and then pressing the brakes? I'm thinking in terms of cost on wearing out your clutch pad versus wearing out your brakes. Is it good for the engine?
On quick stops, downshifting would not slow me down enough and I would have to either clutch-brake or brake-clutch depending on the condition.
