When I first heard the noise, I was working in Ottawa (definitely known for its cold, very cold, winters. My dealer was 417 Saturn SAAB - really good mechanic, and good service.
They claimed that they hadn't heard the complaint before, and didn't know what caused it. I subsequently wrote SAAB, and GM - but never got a response (I guess that is normal for good client care - the only time I did get a response was when I sent a letter asking about undercarriage protection - given our cold wet weather, icy driving conditions, and the large amount of salt that they scatter on our roads, I have always had my cars oil sprayed to protect the undercarriage and body parts from rust - GM wrote me that any an application of 3rd party products might void my rust warranty).
I now use a Montreal SAAB dealer for servicing - o Decarie Boulevard - but I haven't yet asked them if they know the cause of the suspension noise.
I did, by the way, get a shock when I went to get my 30,000k servicing - I found the headlight housing had been broken and had to be replaced (the plastic hok to which the headlight is secured to the car body had cracked, and the headlight was loose in opening, just sitting on the front fender) - the whole headlight housing needed to be replaced as it is a single unit (cost $130) - but what surprised me was that the component was made in France - here I am thinking that I purchased a safe, Swedish-built car, and I am replacing parts made in other countries. It got me to thinking that possibly the suspension was made in a warm Mediterranean climate, or possibly some oriental or subtropical nation, and that would explain the suspension creaking and complaining when forced to go driving in our cold Canadian winter.
