I don't know much about Saabs, but on all my previous VWs they recommended keeping the initial fill in for 5,000 miles. Those extra shavings that are floating around get trapped in the oil filter, so no need to worry about that. Anything that slips past supposedly helps the engine break in, and the rings seat. I have spoken with a very highly respected Porsche and VW engineer (engines) and he confirmed that for VWs anyway, that keeping the initial fill of oil in for a few thousand miles will help seat the rings and prevent ring failure later in life.
Just my 2 cents from my VW perspective. I have no idea how or why Saab would be any different, except that they are Swedish. :-)
