changing your own oil - finer points from a two-wrench mechanic

Today, I changed my own oil for the 5th time in my life. Following the oil change, I went to the recyclers and dumped the container.
While there, I learned some things from the mechanic I hadn't realized should be done:
The new filter should (a) be filled with new oil and (b) the seal on the new filter should be greased before screwing it tight (but not too tight).
The mechanic says filling the filter with oil is "easier on the engine" from start-up. Someone would have to explain why. I'll take his word for it.
The mechanic says greasing the oil filter seal is a good way to assure yourself you'll be able to get it off again when you change oil next time. I've seen a few that were troublesome to get off. You don't want to get into problems in your own garage, where tool selection and working conditions are probably less that professional.
I figure I more than pay for the premium Mobil 1 price and better filter by doing this work myself. I use only metal ramps and no axle jacks. Evry time I use 'em, I've amortized the cost by an offset against labour. Three or four oil changes and they're paid for.
While under there, a quick visual showed me there is rust on a metal ring above the strut. Not too much rust; nor is it in any way an integrity problem but some time when it's warmer, I'll be applying the TremClad. This part would take all the high speed crut a winter off-tires gravel spray would throw so it's no real surprise.
Next item will be new plugs later in the spring, whether I need them or not. New plugs are the cheapest tune-up money can buy and immediate payback starts in better performance. All I need to do to do the job right is borrow my buddy's torque wrench.
Although today's plugs can go a long, long way, I'm informed they also tend to form a mettalic bond with the block after awhile and you don't want that. You really-really don't want that.
