Until a few days ago, I was as sceptical as you about this problem being real. That said, I still am.
I was driving westbound on the Penna Turnpike on a decent morning, but the road was still wet from some snow/rain the night before. The SID read 16 degrees F. Cruise control was on and I was following another car at about 75mph. I hadn't touched the brakes for at least 20 minutes. We encountered a sudden slowdown (as a result of some construction ahead) and I had to break speed. Hit the brake pedal, and pretty much nothing happened, a quite frightening moment. The gap between me and the car in front was closing, so I braked harder -- far more than successful. I instantly had full braking power and slowed down FAST. There was some sharp pulling as you described, but nothing overly dangerous.
There is but one possible explanation for this: iced rotors. At 16 degrees on wet pavement, there is little question that there would be ice on there. This is my first experience with any kind of braking problem, and I think that the special circumstances more than justify it. I've never had any problems in rain or anything else. Braking performance is reduced after long highway runs in the wet, but this is to be expected in any car. Never before has there been a "no brakes" feel, and I hope never again.
I'd like to hear more specifics about these Saab aftermarket pads, though.
