The click indicates that the ignition switch was funtional. The starter motor has a large solenoid that pushes the starting gear pinion to engage it into mesh with the ring gear on the fly wheel.
There are two possibilities.
One is that the pinion gear met tooth on tooth with the ring gear and was thus blocked from sliding into mesh. This would be very rare, and usually some current is supplied to the motor to make the pinion gear turn which reduces this possibility.
The other thing that can happen is that the pinion gear moves into mesh with the large ring gear. When it moves this far, a contact is made to provide full current to the starting motor. If this contact does not make, you hear the gears engage but nothing happens. This can be caused by wear and other degradation. On a newer vehicle, this would not be expected.
Other possible causes would be a bad battery. This might explain your starting problems. Have you checked the electrolyte level and added distilled water? Are the battery terminal connectors tight and clean?
If your plugs are not in good shape, or your injectors are dirty, this can cause delayed starting (poor spray pattern). If you have not been cleaning your injectors, try Techron Conentrate, 3 x's per year. Not injector cleaner, but 'concentrate'.
