If you are looking to install your own knob this should help you out!
Here is what you need:
* Tension-type hacksaw with a fine tooth blade (typically used for metal cutting)
* Small flat head screw driver.
* Towels
* Razor knife (kind with steel handle and retractable blade)
* Loc-tite 2 part epoxy adhesive
* Small pliers
* Rubbing alcohol
* A small dab of synthetic grease
* Patience
Instructions:
1. Pry off your existing knob cap with a screwdriver.
2. Rip off the existing leather knob cover.
3. Place a towel around your shifter boot and one over your passenger seat.
4. Carfully begin to saw throught the top of your knob (ouch that hurts).
5. Stop sawing when you hit the white nylon core.
6. Carfully use your razor knife to make a cut down the side of the knob (down to the nylon core).
7. Peel off the black rubber outer core of the knob.
8. Make sure that the shifter is in neutral.
9. Peel off the clear tape from the top of the white nylon core.
10. Carefully use your screwdriver to un-snap the (3) lock tabs from the spring loaded reverse actuator (it is the plastic button that you pull upwards to go into reverse).
11. Carfully begin to saw and whittle away at the white nylon core. I started by making a slit through the top of the nylon core (with hacksaw) and proceeded to use a razor knife to "whittle away" at the side of the core. I recommend gloves at this point. Once you have cut completely through the side and top of the nylon core it will twist off with a pair of pliers.
12. Once the nylon core is removed from the steel shifter rod you can then remove the leather boot and reverse lock-out button & spring. I recommend taking a vacuum cleaner and cleaning the plastic shavings from the console (below the shift boot). I also recommend taking a towel and cleaning off all of the grease from the lock-out spring and regreasing it with a synthetic type grease (if you don't you will surely have little plastic shavings clinging to your spring).
13. Now the fun part: Re-install your shifter boot over the shifter rod. Re-install the greased spring. Have your knob on the seat and ready for installation. Take your 2-part epoxy adhesive and mix equal parts in a small glass or steel container. Remember that this stuff sets up in about five minutes so be prepared to use it!!! Once you have the epoxy completely mixed together apply some to the inside of the knob and sit the knob aside. Next depress the spring enough that the steel shifter rod is exposed (where the knob will go...about 2 inches or so).
Clean off the steel rod with some rubbing alcohol (you need to do this because when you depress the greasy spring it will touch the shifter rod and the grease will interfere with the epoxy). Once the rod is clean (spring still depressed) apply epoxy to the end of the shifter rod. Do not use too much epoxy and do not apply it below the splines on the shifter rod.
14. Now the really fun part: With spring still depressed and knob in hand install the knob with a slight twisting motion over the end of the rod. You will need to do (3) things in a matter of about 10 seconds (literally).....First position the knob so it is straight......Next snap the reverse actuator button up into the knob (make sure that the "R" on the button and the "4" on the knob line up).......Next use your finger to make sure that top of the reverse lockout gate is even with the top of the lockout flange. You will see the picture in the instructions that came with the knob and this will make sense.
After about 15 seconds you will not be able to move the knob so make sure it is where you want it!
And believe me.....it is not as bad as it sounds!
Enjoy your new knob!!!
