I think if you're used to a standard, stick to it. Having said that, we have an automatic and it's fine. I would just have more fun with a standard and feel more in control.

What I find interesting about the automatic is that the little buttons for "S" performance and "W" winter driving really do make a difference and so does using premium fuel in "S" mode. I read somewhere that this automatic is a prizewinner for reliablity. I think, if I recall correctly, that it's Japanese.

As well, in the second hand market, I think you'd get a quicker sale with a standard. I remember as a young person looking at used cars with buddies. We'd go away from each window we looked in on the used car lot with a big "ehttp://wwwhttp://wwwww!" when we encountered "slush-box sports cars".

Maybe those days have passed. I'd ask used car salesman selling upper end cars what their experience tells them if resale is a consideration now.

I can't comment on your price as when you come to the short strokes, some dealers may sell for less but as the car is selling way better this year than last (and the year before), I think the days of huge bargains may be coming to a close.

Our 1999 has been perhaps an exceptional car for maintenance. At Cartalk, the survey shows the owner of a 1999 might have expected to pay $360 or so on repairs and maintenance during the year (avg).......... To which I say NO WAY!

I'd be pressed to account for even half that amount including oil changes etc. at 30K miles. Having said that, I do my own oil changes and wheel changovers. The car has not required balancing or alignment and the brakes still have some life left in the pads even if 90% of those miles are city miles.

Congratulations on your new car. Picking the Saab after a lot of research is a good sign that you've been reading the right materials. I wonder about your color and accessories selection . Remember to pres the dealer to throw in a cargo net, a bollte of touch up paint, and a Saab baseball cap; perhaps even an armrest. If he presses for the extra bucks, make him upgrade the front spkrs.

Cheers
