Although the little switch can be confusing, the trunk light is actually automatic. Go to the garage, remove the rear shelf, and watch for yourself. I'm not sure why you'd want to turn the light completely off...maybe if hauling with the trunk open? My problem with the light is that it is poorly located and quite dim. There have been many times when I've got the trunk full of stuff that totally covers up the light. There should be something on the hatch itself.
I agree on the necessity of auto open and close for the windows and sunroof. Especially the sunroof, since it's so slow.
You can get rid of the cupholder in the dash if you REALLY wanted to. My very early '99 just has blank space there. I'm sure the dealer could order the part.
No one should be interested in a S40. It's pretty much just a Mitsubishi with Volvo written on it. If you want a Japanese car, buy an actual one.
