I think it depends heavily on the quality of the independent mechanics in your area. If there is no one nearby who specializes in Saab or at least advertises that they service Saabs, then I would pass. I would say this for any make, not just Saab - though it's true that Saab mechanics are fewer and farther between than most. Having said this, I don't think Saabs are any more or less reliable than any other car, and they aren't particularly tricky to work on - it's just that they *are* different, and it helps alot to have someone who is knowlegable about the car and is up on the latest service bulletins, etc. If there is one thing I've noticed from these boards, it's that an owner's experience is almost totally a factor of the quality of their mechanic. I should also point out that for those without quality mechanics, and even for those with, this board can be an incredible resource.
If you were looking at a Viggen, then a caution about "torque" steer would be in order - but for the base and SE models, I wouldn't let it factor in your decision. By all means, look for it when you test drive the car, but I doubt you'll even notice it. From what I've read here, the base does not exhibit this problem at all, and the SE does so only in extreme circumstances. The occasional SE owner who is bothered by the steering can easily correct the problem by switching to the base model's wheels and tires.
