Over on the General board, I posted a piece from the UK reporting on a German technical institute's findings re quality of Eurocars. Volvo's model line came in for severe criticism. 1.6m owners were reporting quality problems across the product range. Volvo produced the 4th worst cars in Europe on this measure.
Haste makes for waste and dissatisfied owners. Meanwhile, my "quirky" Maytag-Saab keeps on chugging flawlessly.
I owned one of the "good" Volvos from the very early 70s. I remember how quickly Volvo's reputation went downhill following a spate of bad fuel injection etc. problems. In those days, Saab wasn't strong enough to pick up the slack. I went back to American cars hearing about the Volvo problems. (A Pontiac 6000 STE which had a cobbled-together computerized carb which failed but was otherwise decent transportation and certainly a "pretty car" for its day.)
I don't like to win success on the backs of others but this is the very essence of competition. People who buy these premium cars have very high standards and will not tolerate crap.
