Peanut oil a cover up but lasts long & looks great. I use Dawn soap & brush it clean and dry with a cloth. Next I sponge it with warm water careful not to let any soap water on the paint as Dawn will remove wax from your car. I don't know about other dishwashing soaps, but Dawn is a wax remover, a trick some detailers use.
You might want to detail your plastic parts with peanut oil first using a wax applicator sponge & put it on thick before you wax. That way, any wax you get on the plastic won't be able to adhere. When you completely buffed the car, use the same (or another) towel to buff the excess peanut oil off your plasstic trim.
My personal preference is a mix of 75% peanut oil and 25% Por 15 Boss Gloss. My "trim Salad Mix"
