I thought about an S4, A4 1.8T and a 2.8.
Here's what made up my mind on th 9-3.
The 1.8T is perfect, with the exception of the fact that it's too expensive for a car that doesn't have leather. And the back seat leg and headroom are too small (this is someone excusable on the 1.8T).
The 2.8 isn't bad, but it's a gas pig if you misbehave at all. The back seat is now becoming humorous at this point. Otherwise, sweet car, if not a bit pricy.
The S4? Obscenely fun to drive - makes an Explorer look fuel effecient, though. And at that price point? Audi either needs to stretch the back seat, or pull it out, and make the thing a 2 door.
My biggest criticism about anything VW (Audi or VW) is that they've completely forgotten how to make a car for under $24,000 US that can haul both a tall driver, tall front passenger (we're talking 5'10" here - not NBA) and a back seat that can still take a baby seat. My wife's Jetta is a joke. My parents came here last weekend - I never realized how damn small that '01 Jetta is. Dad, same height as me in front, and wife and mother (both ~ 5'4") in back, and baby in back. Dad and I were accordioned into the front, and the girls (except my daughter - who had plenty of room ;) ) were cramped too. I was too cheap to buy a Passat. I'm trading the wife's car on one next year. But Audi (in the next A4) and VW (in the next Jetta) needs to grow about 1.5" in rear legroom, and get back the headroom they took between the A3 and A4 Jetta (and fix the damn trunk dinky opening).
Anyhow, If price were no object, and I didn't care about how petite the back seat was, A4 baby... If the same were true and Saab offered an AWD Viggen? You'd be able to keep that S4. I'd take me an AWD Viggen anyday (Silver, please). If I'm paying $40K for a car with too much torque, I want a way to get it to the ground.
