Got a quick question for you all. How hard has it been to get a dealer to let you test drive a Viggen?

Here in Columbus, the only Saab dealer is Midwestern Auto Group. I do go there a lot and look at cars, but I have only test driven one from there, and that was several years ago. On the whole, I go test driving fairly rarely...but I do admit to doing it when I am not necessarily interested in a car. I love my current 95 900 Convertible, but I do plan on getting another car at some point in the next year or so. I just test drove the S4, and it really didn't turn me on.

So I went into to MAG to test drive a Viggen. The salesman said ok...ran into the main office, and then came out and said that the Viggen 5door outside had been sold, and was not testdrivable (he said the owner hadn't come by to pick it up yet--I had looked at the vehicle earlier and saw no "sold" card.)

I then asked about the other Viggen 5door--on the other side of the lot. He looked confused...ran back into the office, where the head Audi/Saab guy (who I have seen before, just dunno where) told me that they don't like letting the "high performance cars, such as the S4, Viggen, A6 4.2, A8 and TT--on test drives to keep the mileage low on them (the S4 I test drove was at Byers Imports, on the other side of town.) He said that the way they have these cars test driven is by the person expressing interest in the vehicle, performing a credit check, and then finally having them test drive the vehicle.

I understand where they are coming from--the last Viggen they had, a convertible, was sold with 155 miles, and the buyer certainly wanted detail on where that mileage came from. While the Viggen is an unusual car and all, and I could understand that they would want to keep the mileage off the vehicles, I find the dealer's attitude a bit odd...especially since he named the S4 and TT...of which the dealer had so many you could throw a stick at them.

Is this universal behavior...or just this dealer? Either way, I'll probably go to Just Saab in Dayton/Cincinnati.
