I would use the cup holder in the center console, behind the power window switches (you need to open the top and swing it back). While that one isn't exactly ideal either (you have to reach backwards), it's better than having it on the dash, where coffee can spill into your CD player...the cupholders in my old Volvo 850 were much better located, but they wouldn't hold a Snapple size bottle.
Cup holders should always be located closer to the car's center of gravity (i.e. the transmission tunnel!) as there's less movement there. The dash is a really poor place to begin with. Maybe in the redesign they'll be there??
