"Time for Service"

I have been meaning to check my manual, but I had an oil change done at 7,500 miles at a quickie lube place. I haven't had any servicing done to my 9-3 base since the first 1,000 mile checkup was done at 3,000 miles. Now there is a message that flashes "Time for Service" on the SIR every time I start the car - the only way to clear it is to press CLR on the SIR.
The simple answer, of course, is to take the car in for service. However, the larger question is: why is this happening? what if I want to perform whatever (neglible) service the car requires on my own? The display does not say "Check Engine", for which I would take the car in - although it is a pain to get a loaner car...
Thanks,
stuart
