I had a '99 9-3 Base auto with cloth interior for about a year and a half. I loved the 9-3, but was totally blown away by the Aero. Part of the decision to sell the 9-3 was because I'd finally grown tired of the automatic transmission, but the Aero is a better car almost all the way around. Cargo room is actually not that much larger than the 9-3, but rear seat comfort is definitely much better in the 9000.
In terms of handling, it's really hard for me to say. I've never driven a car like yours before, so I don't know how it compares to the Aero. Although one might expect the larger car to handle worse, this is definitely not the case. The steering system on the 9000 is far better than on the NG900/9-3 models. In the 9-3, there are a lot of poorly engineered rubber bushings, and the steering rack is mounted to the flexible firewall rather than to the subframe. The difference is quite noticable.
In general, the 9-3 is a pretty nice car. The looks are great, it's very comfortable, gets good gas mileage (but it's about the same as your car I think), can easily haul a lot of stuff despite its small size, and is one of the more reliable Saabs yet.
