Don't give up so fast!
I too just took my car in for the 20K service and got the same story. Brakes were 90% work and dealer recommended replacement. Quoted me $189 for front brakes plus shop charges and tax. I thought it highly unususal that brakes on any vehicle should wear out in 20K miles, especially when the tires have plenty on tread left and there had been no alignment problems or pulling to either side.
I previously leased a '97 900SET which went over 40K without brake replacement. I then called SAAB USA at 1-800-955-9007 and spoke to a customer service representative.
I mentioned that SAAB does have an unusual wear/tear warranty for one year or 12K miles on all vehicles. Unususal brake wear should have been picked up during the 10K miles service. They agreed to contact the dealer and gave me a case number for reference.
The next morning (yesterday) I got a call from SAAB stating that they agreed to pay for the brake repair in full. I picked up the car last night.
All seems well.
This is speculation, but maybe this is part of one of the "silent warranties" when specific parts are found to be substandard. I have heard of three other cases of 2000 9-3's with premature brake wear through this bulletin board.
Anyway, SAAB has shown why they will receive repeat business from me. I doubt many other manufacturers would act as quickly or in such a customer friendly manner.
Thank you SAAB, I appreciate your service.
