If you search through some previous posts, you'll see that folks with 17" wheels (stock and aftermarket) are having problems with bending wheels. I agree, handling is better with 17" wheels (have no idea about 18" wheels), but add in a lowered suspension, which has less give over pot holes and rough roads and I'd think that you'd really be in for an expensive lesson. On the other hand, there are a few guys that have put on 17" wheels with the Abbott/Koni suspension upgrade that have had very few problems (besides the obvious "stiffer ride"). If you do end up putting 18" wheels on, please post some pictures and your rundown.
