There is an additional cup holder between the seats. You are absolutely right about the fact that the SID is not water proof...but try dumping your drink over from the cup holder between the seats onto the center console. I can gaurantee that the P/W, P/L, sunroof and ignition switches have not been waterproofed either. The fact is, there's not too many places within the interior of the car where *any* electronics are waterproof. By the way, the SID isn't the only place that is in direct danger from spills; your stereo head unit is right below the SID and will definitely soak up your spill, not to mention the automatic A/C control, which also presents a problem with it's digital display. Let's face it, engineers can only do so much...the rest is pretty much up to us. What can we do about the design of the car if we are determined to use this dangerous and somewhat costly dash mounted cup holder. Absolutely nothing but buy a $13 travel mug that won't allow spills to happen in the first place.
