I posted a response to an old message but I thought I might get more feedback from a new posting about this rattle. I'm not sure if it's the same but I noticed the rattling while at idle at a bank machine w/in the first 500 miles in my 2001 Viggen. The noise becomes much more noticable when engine is under load at idle (when a/c compressor kicks on) I asked dealer to check it out at 1k service and was told they couldn't find it. By turning wheel full right while idling and ducking between tire and fender I was able to pinpoint noise inside clutch housing by left driveshaft. (I assume that is what the large gold housing is) The noise almost disappears when I depress the clutch. At the 5k service I dragged the tech under car and they suddenly were able to hear it. They claim they have heard about it before and it is probably the throw-out bearing? I am hesitant to let them tear apart the clutch housing, which they are willing to do under warranty, considering it doesn't effect performance. On the other hand, pulling upto a stoplight in a spanking-new 38k car w/ a noise loud enough for the guy in the 330i in the next lane to hear is not what I need either so I'll probably let them go after it. Otherwise love the car...
